Question 1

Is MBBS available in the USA?

Accepted Answer

No. US medical schools normally award the MD or the DO. An MBBS earned in another country is treated in the United States as a foreign medical qualification, and its holder applies for training as an international medical graduate.

Question 2

What is MBBS called in America?

Accepted Answer

The closest equivalent is the Doctor of Medicine, or MD, awarded by LCME-accredited medical schools. The DO degree carries the same licensure rights.

Question 3

Can Indian students study medicine in the USA?

Accepted Answer

Yes, through the MD or DO pathway rather than an MBBS programme, and only at schools that accept international applicants. Funding requirements are strict and federal loans are generally unavailable.

Question 4

How long does the pathway take?

Accepted Answer

Generally four years of undergraduate study, four years of medical school and three to seven years of residency depending on specialty.

Question 5

Are Caribbean graduates considered IMGs?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada apply to US residency as international medical graduates and require ECFMG certification.
